Free, hands-on training will help pilots recognize their personal symptoms of oxygen deprivation at altitude.

FORT MEADE, Md. — Fort Meade Executive Airport will host a specialized aviation safety training event bringing the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Portable Reduced Oxygen Training Enclosure (PROTE) to Maryland. The free training opportunity will give qualified pilots the chance to experience simulated hypoxia in a controlled environment and learn to recognize their individual symptoms of oxygen deprivation.

Provided by physiologists from the FAA’s Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), the training is designed to help pilots better understand one of the most significant physiological risks associated with flying at higher altitudes. Hypoxia occurs when the body does not receive enough oxygen, potentially impairing judgment, coordination, and decision-making before a pilot recognizes that something is wrong.

Through the PROTE experience, participants can observe their own responses to reduced oxygen levels while being safely monitored by trained personnel. Developing an awareness of personal hypoxia symptoms can help pilots recognize the warning signs earlier and make more informed decisions in flight.

The event will run Wednesday, October 21, through Saturday, October 24, with scheduled 45-minute training sessions accommodating groups of five participants. Sessions will be available from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday. Participants should plan approximately two hours for the full event, including check-in and preparation.

Event Details and Registration

The training will take place at Fort Meade Executive Airport, Hangar 85, located at 7501 General Aviation Drive, Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.

Participation is free, but advance scheduling is required. Pilots must be at least 18 years old and hold a current FAA First-, Second-, or Third-Class Medical Certificate or BasicMed qualification.

Participants must bring the appropriate documentation and government-issued identification for verification at check-in and arrive at least 30 minutes before their scheduled session.

Pilots can reserve a training session through the event's SignUpGenius registration page. Registration should be completed using the email address associated with the pilot’s FAA WINGS account.

The event is sponsored by the FAA Safety Team’s Baltimore Flight Standards District Office, with support from Fort Meade Executive Airport, Fort Meade Flight Activity/Capital Technology University, the Maryland Aviation Council, and FAA CAMI.

By hosting specialized safety education opportunities such as this one, Fort Meade Executive Airport continues to support pilot education, professional development, and a strong safety culture across the regional aviation community.
