About FME
Fort Meade Executive Airport
FME is a public-use, general aviation airport serving businesses, defense contractors, aviation schools, healthcare facilities, and private regional aviation needs. FME supports a wide range of aviation operations while maintaining a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and responsible airport management. As a state-owned facility, the airport plays an important role in supporting economic activity, workforce development, and transportation access throughout the region.

History & Timeline

Fort Meade Executive Airport is a former U.S. Army airfield designated for privatization by the 1988 Base Realignment & Closure Act. The airport closed in 1995 and then reopened on November 1st, 1999.
It was originally named Tipton Airport, for William D. “Shorty” Tipton - a Maryland native and career military pilot. In 2025, the airport rebranded as Fort Meade Executive Airport and is operated today by the Tipton Airport Authority - a state-chartered public corporation. The 366-acre facility is bordered by Ft. Meade and the Patuxent National Wildlife Refuge.
Over the years, the Authority has resurfaced the runway and taxiways, installed both Jet-A and 100LL fueling systems, installed a MIRL system, constructed 22 T-hangars, completed many improvements, and is planning a 1,200 foot runway extension. FME remains committed to maintaining the best airfield and delivering the best standards to our community.
